Singapore's DyStar celebrates 125 years of Indigo excellence
2022 / 06 / 16
DyStar, a leading specialty chemical company with a heritage of more than a century in product development and innovation, is celebrating its legacy of hard work and notable achievements for Indigo excellence in the past 125 years. The story started with a huge market demand for the industrial synthesis of Indigo during the late nineteen century. The first industrial synthesis of Indigo, Indigo Pure BASF, was successfully manufactured and introduced into the market by BASF in July 1897. It was a significant achievement for the German chemical industry. Over the years, the product has made revolutionary changes to the supply chain. New technologies enabled the transformation of synthetic Indigo powder application to pre-reduced DyStar Indigo Vat 40 per cent solution. Being the pioneer in the market, the pre-reduced solution set an important industry milestone when it was first launched in 1998. DyStar`s innovation remains a core catalyst in the chemistry research and development journey. When we introduced DyStar Indigo Vat 40 per cent solution, the core intelligence lies behind the benefits from sustainability to health and safety. The technology transforms Indigo into its soluble Leuco form, making the Indigo dyeing process more sustainable, efficient, and stable in production. In addition, workers in denim mills can be assured of product safety as well, the company said in a press release.
India's Cosmo Specialty Chemicals makes cationic softener for textiles
2022 / 06 / 08
Cosmo Speciality Chemicals, which is based in India and is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Cosmo Films, has launched Silky SF, a cationic softener that enables excellent softening effect on all kinds of textile. The newly launched product is cost-effective and offers a silky touch to the fabric. The product will be available across the Indian/global market. Silky SF softener is recommended as a finishing product for all kinds of fabrics, especially cotton as it imparts surface smoothness to the material. The application of this finishing agent provides a soft, fluffy, soapy, voluminous surface to the physical texture of the fabric. To increase lubricity of the fabric, this finishing agent can be applied with exhaust and pad process application. Silky SF is a cost-effective product and ensures minimal effect on shade change of treated materials on post softening thermo-mechanical treatments, Cosmo Specialty Chemicals said in a media statement. The softener is easy-to-use and its application retains quality while imparting surface smoothness and supple handle to the cloth. Silky SF is miscible in water in all proportions. For textile processing, its usage is suitable for exhaust and pad application techniques. The recommended dose for Exhaust is 2-4 per cent while for continuous use is 20-40 g/l. Backed up by technical know-how and long-term experience in textile processing, formulations of anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric surfactants, Cosmo Speciality Chemicals has a unique and strong experience in speciality textile chemicals. The R&D facility is equipped with sophisticated analytical instrumentations including SEM-EDS, TGA-MS, DMA, FTIR & imaging IR, DSC & optical microscope, etc. which helps the company develop products at a molecular level. [Our aim is to innovate and develop products that yield optimum results in terms of efficiency and costs for our consumers. Silky SF is a convenient alte

Scientists enhance durability of lithium-sulfur batteries with dyes
2022 / 02 / 17
Many emerging technologies related to sustainable energy, such as grid-scale energy storage systems and electric cars, require high-performance rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have almost reached their theoretical limit, and need to be supplanted by batteries with higher theoretical capacity and energy density. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as the potentially best option for next-generation rechargeable batteries, due not only to their much higher energy density than LIBs but also to relatively lower costs, thanks to their use of sulfur, a widely abundant material. However, Li-S batteries suffer from a few key issues that need to be solved before they can become commercially viable, with the most prominent one being the [polysulfide shuttling effect." This phenomenon causes long chains of sulfur to leak from the cathode over time, permanently degrading the capacity of the battery with each charge–discharge cycle. Fortunately, in a recent study, a team of scientists from Pusan National University, South Korea, found an efficient way to mitigate the shuttling effect and improve the performance of Li-S batteries. This paper was made available online on September 29, 2021 and will be published in Volume 430 of Chemical Engineering Journal on February 15, 2022. Led by Professor Seung Geol Lee, Assistant Professor Jin Hong Lee, and Associate Professor Oi Lun Li, the team developed an innovative approach involving the use of a common organic dye called methylene blue as a precursor for a novel coating material for the separator of Li-S batteries. The procedure involved dissolving the dye in aniline, a carbon-containing solvent, and subjecting the mixture to plasma engineering followed by heat treatment. This created a porous carbon material doped with both nitrogen and sulfur-two elements already present in methylene blue-that could be applied to the separator be
Switched on IR-Active Organic Pigments
2021 / 08 / 13
In photosynthesis and organic photovoltaics, pigment molecules convert light into electrical charge. A team of chemists have now produced an unusual organic pigment, which is [switched on" by an electrical charge to become a potent dye that absorbs light in the near-infrared range. The team's study, published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, suggests potential applications in systems for electrophysical materials research, photovoltaics, and sensor technology. Charged pigments with intense colors have been predominantly metal based. One well-known example is iron-based Berlin blue or Prussian blue, which is a rich, deep blue. In terms of their chemistry, dyes and pigments of this kind are symmetrical molecules, with one side having a higher charge than the other. The sides exchange electrons, and the molecule absorbs light that is at the same wavelength as this energy exchange. Purely organic pigments with similarly intense colors are rare. Nonetheless, Francis D'Souza's team from the University of North Texas, and colleagues, have now developed a modular organic molecular system precisely to meet this brief. Compared to metals, organic materials have the advantage of being easy to modify. The team chose to target modular construction of the dye molecules, to give customizable molecules that could potentially be given a wide variety of different properties. The core of the new molecule was made of a red fluorescent dye molecule. The researchers then attached a two-part [push–pull", or [donor–acceptor", molecular system to both sides of this core. These systems were able to stabilize electrical charges under specific conditions. In the uncharged state, the pigment was just a blue-colored dye molecule. But when an electronic charge was applied, it demonstrated its full capabilities. The team observed a new, intense absorption band, but not in the visible-light range. The new dye absorbed in the near-infr
